Ghanaian music duo, Keche, made of Keche Joshua and Andrews, have called out the board of Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) for scrapping of the Group of the Year category.
Speaking in an interview on the “Spectacle” on GTV, Keche Joshua underscored that it takes two to compete and he believes there are vibrant music groups in Ghana to compete in that category.
He mentioned DopeNation, The Band Fra, Anlo Soldiers and Santrofi band as groups who are doing very well in the industry.
When asked about his view of the board’s decision, he said; “for me it doesn’t make sense to me. I’ve talked about this in the house several times with Andrews and it doesn’t make sense to me. Assuming we submit our works for 10 categories; even if we lose 9 in the Hiplife categories, we know we can go home with the Group of the Year category, but it’s scrapped off. When it happens like that, it’s like you want to cause someone to lose his daily bread.”
Andrews then weighed in saying, “those at the helm of affairs have their artistes in there. The last time I was talking about the Unsung category and I know most of the people in the organisation have their artistes there. Even if you nominate us and we don’t win, we’d feel motivated and keep going so that we also win it. Again, they’re not explaining anything to us. They’ve left us in the dark. They should explain their decision to us because the scheme is for the artistes. If all the artistes decide not to partake, who are going to award?”
The Group of the Year category has been scrapped off from the scheme for the past two years.
But according to the Robert Klah, the Head of Public Events and Communications, has stated that the decision temporal and it’s so because there aren’t enough vibrant groups to compete. But it’ll be added when there are vibrant groups to compete.
